Another day, another death on the streets of Diepsloot as one man was gunned down on Friday night while another survived.
This is the seventh person killed this year in one of the most dangerous townships in Gauteng. Several other people are still fighting for their lives in hospital after being shot by criminals who have been terrorising people for months now.
Residents fear the killings are organised but police have not identified any masterminds behind them.
“At least batho ba Palestine ba tseba that they’re under attack and who their attackers are. Mo Diepsloot it’s like we’re being attacked by ghosts,” said one resident.
Earlier in January, Gauteng police launched a manhunt for a group of suspects who killed four people in one night in different locations of the township.
A community member at the Friday crime scene confirmed the latest killing, in Diepsloot’s extension 1.
“It looks like the deceased was robbed before being killed. Even his car keys were taken by the suspects. But his body was left next to his car,” he said.
The dead man was driving a Renault Kwid, while the survivor is said to be a taxi driver.
Residents say they live in constant fear. “There were police officers patrolling. But still criminals terrorise us with no fear of being caught by the police. It’s sad how guns are all over,” the community member said.
“How many more must die before our government takes the issue of crime in Diepsloot seriously,” said Diepsloot Community Forum leader Loyiso Toyiya. He called on the president to come to the township and explain how the government can help.
Toyiya said two people who were shot two weeks ago are still in ICU.
