Asavela Mqokiyana makes TV comeback as nurse

Popular actress Asavela Mqokiyana has made her return to television screens after a three-year break.

The talented star has joined the cast of SABC1’s hit soapie Uzalo, where she plays Nurse Sizakele.

Uzalo announced her arrival on Instagram on Wednesday, 4 June, with an exciting post that read: “Awww kodwa weNesi. Introducing Sizakele. TX tomorrow night at 8:30pm.”

Mqokiyana, who hails from Umzimkhulu in Durban, studied at the African Film and Drama Art (AFDA) Academy but left before completing her studies.

Her journey to stardom began when she auditioned for a role on Isithembiso. However, her big break came when she landed the role of Ntwenhle on the popular drama series Isibaya.

She graced screens on Isibaya from 26 February 2018 until the show ended in 2021.

After Isibaya, she appeared as Amogelang in the drama series Abomama, which premiered on 3 July 2021.

She also starred in season two of Durban Gen as Amahle, but the medical drama was later cancelled.

The actress went through a highly publicised divorce in 2024. In a February interview with Zimoja, she revealed she was ready to return to acting.

She also opened up about being willing to marry again in future and mentioned having trusted help to care for her daughter while she focuses on her career.

Fans have welcomed her return with open arms and are eagerly anticipating her performance as Nurse Sizakele on Uzalo.
