Arrest us if you dare, say taxi operators

Taxi operators are preparing to flout the law and ignore the threat of coronavirus by returning to full loads from Monday.

Phillip Taaibosch, President of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), said they would be operating as normal with full loads, in defiance of national regulations.

Long-distance taxis will be also available from Monday and Taaibosch challenged the police to dare try to impound their taxis.

“Whether the minister approves or not, all long-distance taxis must resume operation,” said Taaibosch, adding they would not ask passengers for travel permits.

Taxi operators across the country have rejected the R1 billion Covid-19 relief fund from the government.

Last week, some taxi associations in Gauteng staged a shutdown sending a clear message to the government of their unhappiness about the relief fund offered them.
