And in Ghana….players on team that lost every match earned over R1 million

Despite their worst Afcon performance ever, Ghana’s national football team players still left Cameroon with over R1 million in appearance fees.

The Black Stars failed to win a single Afcon game for the first time in their history and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) removed any bonus the team were due to receive.

Going into the tournament the GFA had agreed upon a R306,000 appearance fee for every player in the tournament where Ghana only played the three group stage games.

The GFA’s communications director Henry Asante Twum said the players didn’t earn a single bonus because they didn’t win any matches.

“They only took their appearance fee of R306,000 and that was it. That was agreed in negotiations before they left for Afcon,” he said on Starr FM.

Ghana’s poor display at Afcon forced the football association to part ways with manager Milovan Rajevac who is said to be unhappy with the compensation package he is being offered.

The GFA have appointed former Ghana defender Otto Addo to take over the Black Stars before their 2022 World Cup playoffs.

Things could go from bad to worse for Ghana who could fail to qualify for the World Cup to be hosted in Qatar as they were drawn to take on Nigeria for a spot in Qatar in a two-legged fixture on 23 March and 29 March.

Both teams have struggled with management issues since Afcon and will be hoping to get to the grudge match on steady feet.
