The first deputy secretary of the ANC, Nomvula Mokonyane, said she is surprised by how well the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party is doing so far.
“We went into these elections with the full intention of absolute victory. Until all the votes are counted, we hold that idea,” she said.
Mokonyane said MK’s performance in KwaZulu-Natal has surprised the ANC.
She spoke during a Friday media briefing at the Results Operation Centre in Midrand.
The ANC has lost significant support in KZN to MK, which led with 43.29% on Friday afternoon, while the ANC follows with only 18.48%.
Nationally, the five-month-old ANC splinter party was in the top three with 11.76%.
Mokonyane said it was unfortunate that they were contesting against Jacob Zuma – an organiser, activist, and former president of the ANC.
She added that although there was a decline in ANC support in the elections, this will not affect Cyril Ramaphosa’s position as the party president.
“His term is still relatively fresh. Collectively, as members of the ANC, we are confident that he has to remain the party’s leader,” she said.
“These are not children’s politics; we are a liberation movement. Hurdles we come through don’t have to be apportioned to an individual. The man [Ramaphosa] addressed over seven community meetings in a day and visited 20 to 30 houses in a day.”
Mokonyane rubbished claims that the ANC has started coalition talks with the DA and other parties.
“Decisions of the ANC are not taken on these floors but through ANC structures. The NEC will meet today and the structures of the ANC will meet. For now, we are not talking to anybody,” she said.
