The ANC chairperson of KwaZulu-Natal’s most rural region is tipped to lead the interim provincial structure as plans are underway to dissolve the provincial structure elected in July 2022.
The name of Siphile Mdaka, chairperson of the Nokuhamba Nyawo Region in the far north of the province, emerged after the IEC announced the 29 May general election results, which saw ANC support in KZN plummet to 17%..
Sources told Scrolla.Africa that the suggestion that Mdaka lead the structure followed long dissatisfaction of many comrades, including alliance partners of the ANC, about the bullying leadership style of chairperson Siboniso Duma and secretary Bheki Mtolo.
“In fact Mdaka was prepared to be the incoming KZN secretary at the next ANC elective conference. Unfortunately the turn of events which have embarrassed the ANC has forced many leaders, including secretary general Fikile Mbalula, to propose his name to be made the convenor of the interim structure that will be appointed after they disband Duma and Mtolo,” a source said.
On Monday the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in KZN, which is part of the ANC Alliance, said Duma and Mtolo had cost the ANC dismally.
Sanco were the first in December to call for the disbanding of the ANC provincial leadership as they complained about Mtolo and Duma.
“There is nothing the ANC branches could do about these humiliating results. Literally these comrades have been limping from one disaster to the other. The list of their disasters is endless. Sanco KZN in its press briefing of 20 December 2023 did mention some of their disasters which chiefly, amongst others, included their unparalleled arrogance and bullish tactics,” said Cele.
He described the ANC KZN leadership as supercilious provincial officials who undermined the alliance partners.
Mdaka declined to respond about the plan to appoint him as KZN convenor.
Mbalula told Scrolla.Africa that he was in a meeting and promised to come back before the deadline but unfortunately did not make it.
