A senior member of the ANC in the Mzala Nxumalo region (Zululand) in KwaZulu-Natal has publicly confirmed that he persuaded party members to vote for the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party during the 29 May elections.
Prince Bonga Zulu, an ANC leader in the Nongoma region, says members followed his advice, which makes him happy.
Zulu’s admission confirms long-held suspicions that some ANC members secretly worked for the MK party led by former president Jacob Zuma.
In his Facebook post on Wednesday, 3 July, Zulu wrote: “I wish to thank all the ANC members from Ward 9 in Nongoma … I asked to vote for the MKP and did that and left a mark. All I am saying is Jikijele Mkhonto Jikijela (Throw Assegai, Throw),” he wrote.
Zulu confirmed to Scrolla.Africa that he wrote the post.
He said he was proud of his actions and confirmed that he is still a member of the ANC, even though he intends to resign in the coming weeks.
Zulu said he was angered by ANC regional leaders who mistreated him and, on election day, came to him to ask for his support in mobilising volunteers and agents.
“I acceded to their request to mobilise for them,” Zulu said. “However, after getting the agents and volunteers they wanted, I told them to vote for Umkhonto, and I am happy they did that.”
He told Scrolla.Africa that he was removed from the governing party’s official WhatsApp groups in April after his name was said to have appeared in one of the MK party’s groups.
Zulu said his trouble with the ANC started on 16 December when Zuma announced that he would campaign and vote for MK. He made a comment that other ANC comrades viewed as support for Zuma.
Ntokozo Nxumalo, the regional secretary of the ANC, said the party had not received Zulu’s resignation and would investigate his Facebook post.
“I am not sure whether this is the Bonga Zulu of the ANC who posted this on Facebook. Also, we haven’t received any resignation letter from Comrade Bonga Zulu. We will investigate the matter and inform the media in due course,” Nxumalo said.
