ANC KZN executive committee to be axed

The disbanding of the ANC provincial executive committee in KwaZulu-Natal is imminent. Secretary-general Fikile Mbalula initially blocked the party’s national executive committee from disbanding the committee to avoid chaos during the recent election campaign.

Scrolla.Africa has learned from reliable sources that the decision will be affirmed soon, as the party’s leadership has finalised the list of people who will lead the interim structure.

Among the leaders confirmed to take over from secretary Bheki Mtolo and chairperson Siboniso Duma are former KZN deputy chairperson Mike Mabuyakhulu as coordinator, and ANC Women’s League convener Bongi Sithole-Moloi as treasurer.

The convener is planned to be the uMkhanyakude district mayor Siphile Mdaka.

“The decision is imminent, which means it can be taken even next week,” a source said. “Mabuyakhulu is the one who was also deployed in eThekwini and his recommendations about the state of the organisation in that region led to the recall of mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.”

The source said that the ANC national leadership wanted to dissolve KZN’s provincial executive committee even before the 29 May elections because of the crises and divisions in the branches.

Another source said provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo never agreed with the national leadership’s instruction to deploy its own people to oversee general election campaigns and head election committees.

“Instead, Mtolo sent his own people, who once led with him in the ANC Youth League, to head election campaigns. In eThekwini, he deployed former ANCYL KZN chair Mthandeni Dlungwana, whose dismissal failed to control the region because leaders in branches deliberately sabotaged him,” the source said.

In May last year, Mtolo instructed a meeting of ANC branch chairpersons and secretaries held at Moses Mabhida Stadium not to allow any unelected employee to control branches for the 29 May elections.

He described those employees as “briefcase leaders” delivered without approval from the top.

When contacted, Mdaka questioned the source of the decision, but would not comment. Mabuyakhulu’s phone did not accept messages from Scrolla.Africa asking him to comment.

Mbalula and ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
