Amorim’s Sporting stun City

A Viktor Gyokeres hatrick helped Sporting to a 4-1 win over Manchester City, whose woes continue with a third straight defeat in all competitions.

Day one of matchday four in the Uefa Champions League saw 30 goals scored, with Liverpool going back to the summit of the league stage with a 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen and their fourth straight win in Europe.

Xabi Alonso’s return to his beloved Anfield was not a fairytale one as his side collapsed to a remarkable second half showing from Arne Slot’s side.

Luis Diaz was the star as he scored a hatrick to help the Reds bring the fireworks to Merseyside on Guy Fawkes night.

The other hatrick of note was that of Gyokeres, whose manager Ruben Amorim bid farewell to the Sporting fans in style.

The Portuguese boss, who will join Manchester United in two weeks, could not have asked for a better result against his future rivals.

Phil Foden’s opener was quickly overturned as the English champions got a first glimpse of the style of football that is soon to arrive in the red half of Manchester.

Another shock result came in the Spanish capital, where holders Real Madrid were comprehensively beaten by three goals to one by AC Milan.

Malick Thiaw, Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders were on the scoresheet for the Italian giants.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund got a 1-0 win over Sturm Graz as Celtic beat Leipzig 3-1.

Monaco were 1-0 winners away to Bologna while Lille and Juventus played out a 1-1 draw at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

In the earlier games, PSV thumped Girona 4-0 and Dinamo Zagreb won 4-1 at Slovan Bratislava.

On Wednesday, Aston Villa travel to Club Bruges before Bayern Munich take on Benfica, PSG play Atletico, Crvena Zvezda face Barcelona and Inter host Arsenal.
