The “Ayepyep” singer, real name Oupa Sefoka, was driving in Woodmead in Johannesburg when he and another passenger were both killed.
A third occupant was also badly injured in the attack and rushed to a nearby medical centre.
Gauteng Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, did not confirm Sefoka’s death but said police are searching for suspects and investigating circumstances that led to the shooting in Woodmead.
Sumsounds Music, however, has confirmed his death. The identities of the other victims have not been revealed.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo said police received a complaint about a shooting incident at the corner of Woodmead Drive and Woodland Drive at approximately 00.30am on Sunday.
“Police found two people inside a VW Golf with gunshot wounds. Both victims, a driver, and a passenger were certified dead at the scene. It was reported that a third victim, who was driving a BMW X5, was taken to the nearest medical care centre after sustaining gunshot wounds.”
DJ Sumbody’s fans and fellow musicians took to social media to express their sadness and shock.
“This is super shocking and heartbreaking,” wrote his friend and peer, the musician Lady Zamar.
“Sumbody looked out for his people, never held grudges and was welcoming and funny. He was a hustler and game changer in entertainment and in many people’s lives.”
Sefoka was scheduled to host an event called the All White Veuve Picnic at Menlyn Maine on Sunday.
