Amakhosi’s teenage shining light

Mfundo Vilakazi, the 18-year-old football star from Snake Park, Soweto, has quickly become one of the most talked-about teenagers in South African football.

But despite the high expectations, Vilakazi remains grounded. He remembers well the abrupt end to his developing career with Bidvest Wits’ juniors because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the sale of the club in 2020.

The setback affected him greatly, but with encouragement from his father, he returned to the field, pushed by the dream of supporting his family by playing football.

Vilakazi’s journey back to the game saw him playing on local gravel fields before his standout performance against Kaizer Chiefs as a Wits player caught the attention of Amakhosi, News24 reported.

He returned to grassroots football with Doornkop Students and did well at the Philly’s Games in 2021, with many beginning to notice his talents.

His skills led to a call from Chiefs, and after a brief stint in their Under-17 team, Vilakazi was promoted to their DStv Diski Challenge squad.

In January 2023, Vilakazi made his first-team debut for Kaizer Chiefs, a dream come true for the youngster.

His popularity increased, leading to a sponsorship deal with Puma.

Despite the fame, Vilakazi remains focused on his development, understanding the importance of patience and hard work in achieving lasting success in football.
