Kaizer Chiefs continued their winning streak against Stellenbosch FC, securing a 2-0 victory in their opening Betway Premiership match at Athlone Stadium.
The win marked their fifth consecutive league triumph against Stellenbosch, solidifying the Soweto Giants’ dominance over the Winelands team.
Stellenbosch defender Siviwe Nkwali was red-carded early in the first half, allowing Chiefs to capitalise on the numerical advantage.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo scored the opening goal from a free-kick, while Makabi Lilepo sealed the win with a penalty in injury time.
Despite being down to 10 men, Stellenbosch pressed hard, hitting the woodwork three times in the first half.
However, Chiefs’ goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made crucial saves to keep his team ahead.
The win ended Chiefs’ nine-match winless streak and showcased their strength against Stellenbosch on an opening weekend that saw Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates drop points.
The Brazilians only managed a 1-1 draw at Chippa United while the Bucanneers were on the wrong side of a 1-0 defeat at home to Sekhunene United.
