Alexandra residents came out in numbers to vote for the parties of their choice on Wednesday.

As one of the most crowded townships in the country, Alex has many voting stations.

Each voting station was packed, with some voters sitting on the floor waiting for their turn to mark their X.

Driving through the township, fondly known as Gomora, several people were at their business as usual.

On the corner of 4th Avenue and Vasco Da Gama Street, a woman was making a killing by selling amagwinya (vetkoek).

A long queue of people was waiting to buy the traditional deep-fried delights.

When asked if she had voted already, the woman said:  “Voting won’t feed my children. This is the business that will feed my children.”

Many children played street soccer and other games with schools closed for the day.

Some men played dice while others drank their favourite beers in the sun.

Quite a few said they would vote later when the queues got shorter.

Some voting stations had Bluetooth speakers where party agents pumped out struggle songs.

A number of people entertained themselves by dancing to the songs while waiting for their chance to vote.

Local taxis moved up and down, hooting and picking up passengers.
