A man who suspected his fiancée was cheating on him, allegedly shot her, her lover, her mother and her nephew.
The woman, Thenjiwe Mgobhozi, 34, and her alleged lover, Simphiwe Ndlovu, died on the scenes, a kilometre apart, in Ezindlovini, Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the man who is believed to have committed the crimes arrived at the home of the man he suspected of dating his fiancée on Wednesday morning, allegedly kicked down the door and shot him, killing him instantly.
He then proceeded to his fiancée’s home, where he allegedly shot her in the head. His fiancée’s mother and her eight-year-old grandchild were also shot, and sustained injuries. The grandchild was grazed by a bullet in the arm, while the mother was shot in the chest.
Ngcobo said the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle. He was arrested later on the same day at Nsuze, where he was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
“A 43-year-old man was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm,” said Ngcobo.
Mgobhozi’s family was still shaken by the incident when Scrolla.Africa spoke to them on Thursday.
Her stepfather, Njabulo Ntuli, confirmed that his wife was recovering in hospital. He could not speak further as he said the family needed time to process what had happened.
Private security guard company Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said it is believed that the suspect had gone to the alleged boyfriend’s home the day before the shooting.
“According to the alleged boyfriend’s elderly mother, a man arrived at the residence in search of her son on Tuesday afternoon. He allegedly said the deceased was having an affair with his girlfriend and that he intended to shoot him. The deceased was not at home at the time,” said Balram.
The suspect returned the following day. The mother recognised him and tried to block the door but the suspect allegedly produced a firearm and forcefully pushed her out of the way. He then went into her son’s room and allegedly shot him in the head.
