Alleged instigator, Mchunu gets bail

“I’m over the moon. Justice has been served.”

Those were the words of former Ukhozi FM radio presenter Ngizwe Mchunu who was granted R2,000 bail at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He is accused of inciting violence and breaking lockdown regulations during the #FreeZuma unrest that lasted more than a week in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

He is alleged to have incited violence during a briefing at a Bryanston hotel on 11 July, days after former president Jacob Zuma was arrested and jailed for contempt of court.

Mchunu, a staunch Zuma supporter, handed himself over to the Durban Central Police Station last week after he evaded cops for more than a week.

Mchunu is also facing a case of breaching the disaster management act.

Handing down the judgement, Magistrate Gayle Pretorius said that she was convinced that Mchunu had strong emotional ties to the country.

“He is not the kind of person who can afford to just disappear. It is a combination of his responsibility to his wife and his 12 children and his loyalty to Mr Zuma,” Pretorius said.

Mchunu is not allowed to address any gatherings or to leave the province of KZN unless he is going to Johannesburg for his next court appearance which is on 21 October.
