Ever since the amapiano genre was introduced in the music industry, it has been evolving. Now Reece Madlisa and Zuma – also known as “AmaRoto” – are taking music lovers back to the legendary kwaito music days.
On Friday the duo from Alexandra released their five-track music compilation EP, titled AmaRoto Volume 2 (Kwaito Edition).
The first single “Iy’ntsimbi Zase Envy” features Qhom artist Dladla Mshunqisi, Busta 929 and Durban rapper Beast, who has been experimenting with different genres including Qhom music.
The duo successfully mixed the usual fast-paced amapiano melody with a nostalgic kwaito bass. It is not the only song with a bold Kwaito finish on the EP.
The song “K’dala Skokota” has echoes of amapiano anthems like “Sithi Sithi” and “Umsebenzi Wethu”, with a heavy kwaito rhythm on the vocals and the structure of the song. It is a definite amapiano game changer.
“K’dala Skokota” features DJ Maphorisa and Soa Matrix, and the late vocalists Killer Kau and Mpura, who both died in the same car accident in August 2021.
Other featured artists include ‘amapiano Queen’ Lady Du, Bob Mabena, Lungstar, Stillow and Josiah De Disciple on the last track, “iJob iJob”.
The album is a follow up from AmaRoto, which won the 27th annual South African Music Award for Best Kwaito Album.
