Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in four hours and 19 minutes in the French Open final at Roland Garros on Sunday.
The 21-year-old’s win on the Paris clay was added to his hard court US Open and grass court Wimbledon successes.
The victory means that he is now only the seventh man to win Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces and the first to win his first three major titles on three different surfaces.
The Spaniard’s perfect record in major finals continued against Zverev, the same man who knocked out the legendary Rafa Nadal in the first round.
Alcaraz also joined his countryman Nadal on the list of being the only two men to lift the Roland Garros trophy under the age of 22.
“It was a great journey, these last two weeks. It’s a tournament I wanted to win since I was a little kid – when I watched this tournament since five or six – so this is a dream come true,” Alcaraz said per Eurosport.
“It was difficult, Zverev played great tennis, he put great pressure on me with his serves. I won the first set but I could have really lost it. It was tricky with the wind and the surface but we have to find a way and adapt our games to the conditions.”
