Christian Kouame, forward for Fiorentina and recent Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) champion with Ivory Coast, is receiving hospital treatment for malaria.

The 26-year-old footballer fell ill on Tuesday night and tests confirmed he has malaria.

Fiorentina said that Kouame’s health is under careful observation and he will continue to be assessed in the coming days to monitor his recovery.

During the Afcon held in his home country, Kouame appeared in four matches, contributing to Ivory Coast’s triumph by securing a 2-1 victory against Nigeria in the final.

His performance was impressive, especially during the quarter-final match against Mali, which also ended in a 2-1 win for his team.

This season, Kouame has been an important figure in Fiorentina’s campaign, taking part in 22 games and scoring one goal.
