The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco could start in mid-December next year to avoid clashing with the new Fifa Club World Cup.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has denied claims that the Afcon will be held every four years instead of every two years in future.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino wanted the tournament to be moved to take place every four years, but the idea was rejected by CAF president Patrice Motsepe.
Initially, the 2025 tournament was planned for June and July.
CAF then denied reports that it would be moved to January 2026 because of a clash with the 32-team Club World Cup, set for June 15 to July 13 2025 in the United States.
A decision is expected soon, but Moroccan organisers are pushing for the group stage to begin in mid-December 2025, with the final in mid-January 2026, The Guardian reported.
The expanded Champions League in Europe, which has two match days in late January, also creates a scheduling issue.
CAF has not ruled out a December start for Afcon next year. Earlier discussions suggested holding the tournament from July 20 to August 17, 2025, but this now seems unlikely.
“There is no CAF position or announcement on the dates for Afcon 2025,” said Luxulo September, CAF’s head of media relations.
“There are ongoing discussions between stakeholders to find common ground on dates. CAF exco will meet to discuss and make a decision soon.”
