Two men accused of raping an 11-year-old girl in Duduza are demanding R30,000 from her family or they say they’ll go ahead with assault charges against the family members who attacked them.

The suspects, who are friends of the girl’s older brothers, were allegedly beaten after the family found out what had happened to the child.

Now, the men are demanding money to drop the charges.

“They said if we don’t pay, they’ll go through with the case,” said the girl’s aunt. “But we don’t have that kind of money. We just want justice for my niece.”

The aunt told Scrolla.Africa that the girl was staying with her during school holidays when she noticed something was wrong.

“I pressured her to confess what happened. She said she was raped by two friends of the family while playing at the park opposite one of the suspect’s homes,” she said.

The family immediately took the child to the police and a hospital for a medical check-up.

When her older brothers found out, they assaulted the suspects. Two security officers and other relatives also joined in.

The suspects opened a case and had several family members arrested. The day after they were released, the suspects phoned the family to demand R30,000 to drop the charges.

The aunt said the family is now worried that the rape case might not go anywhere because a doctor’s report found no signs of penetration.

“The officer told us he can’t arrest them because there’s no evidence. But the doctor also said it doesn’t mean she wasn’t violated,” she said.

She added that the girl recently came home late because she saw the suspects near her school and hid in fear.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant-colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened.

“The suspects appeared before Nigel Margistrate Court and the matter was postponed to the 5th of May 2025.

“Police continue to condemn the acts of vigilantism, taking the law into your own hands constitutes a serious offence and those who continue to do that will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.
