Soweto was a glum place to be on Monday morning as both of its footballing giants – Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates – suffered defeats over the weekend.
Kaizer Chiefs were thumped 4-0 by champions Mamelodi Sundowns while Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to Chippa United.
The Amakhosi were hoping to continue where they left off in midweek after they recorded their first win over Maritzburg United.
Downs, on the other hand, were coming from a shocking defeat at home by TS Galaxy. The champions needed to bounce back – which they did in style.
Amakhosi’s neighbours Pirates were Soweto’s only hope for victory on Sunday when they faced Chippa United.
Well, they too came second best as the Chillie Boys walked away with maximum points after a late 1-0 win.
The Buccaneers were guilty of failing to take the scoring chances they created while the visitors took their only chance of the game.
The other Soweto side, Moroka Swallows, also failed to win, ending their Friday night fixture against Maritzburg United 0-0.
Meanwhile, the premiership newcomers Richards Bay FC have been a surprise package. They are amongst four teams that are yet to taste defeat with Galaxy, AmaZulu and Stellenbosch being the others.
On Saturday they beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 to go top of the table with seven points after three matches.
Before the new season started a week ago the Natal Rich Boys were seen as the weakest team. But they have so far proven that they are not in the premiership to be pushovers.
One of the teams expected to start the season on fire was Cape Town City. Things however haven’t gone as planned for the Citizens as they are bottom of the table.
They have lost all three matches and are seven points behind the leaders.
