When a gangster dies in southern Africa, cars can often be seen spinning wheels and guns are let off as the coffin is lowered into the grave.
This is nothing compared to when a brothel owner dies.
At the Dangamvura Cemetery in Mutare in Zimbabwe on Thursday, a sex worker offered free sex to anyone willing to do it on top of the dead man’s grave – to “honour” him.
After initial hesitation from the men at the graveside, one of the mourners eventually volunteered, to which the crowd cheered and encouraged him to take off his clothes.
In a video shared on social media, two mourners are seen in broad daylight, stripped naked and asking for a condom.
The act was delayed by about half an hour as mourners were trying to secure protection for the two. As soon as they got the condom the two embarked on a steamy sex romp on top of the grave.
Maroni Mazvita Karinda was a well-known brothel owner in the city of Mutare, Manicaland province.
Not everyone found the act amusing or thought that it honoured the dead man. His family said they were not happy with what happened.
Maroni’s brother Fungai Mazvita Karinda told The Weekender: “As a family, we tried to stop them, but they turned a deaf ear to us. We told them that as his friends, they should respect us, but they never relented.”
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson in Manicaland Province Inspector Nobert Muzondo said the culprits will be brought to book.
“We surely cannot tolerate such wayward behaviour. People cannot be intimidated in public, let alone on a grave during a funeral with onlookers cheering as if they are watching a soccer match,” he said.
