After a thrilling upset at Cravan Cottage, Super Sunday concluded with a stalemate at Old Trafford as the Manchester derby ended goalless for the first time in five years. For the first time in the Premier League era Manchester United and Manchester City could both fail to finish in the top four. And following a derby devoid of any excitement, it would be hard to argue against that being fair.
Yes, after Chelsea dropped points against Brentford in the day’s other 0-0 game, Pep Guardiola’s side could still make the top four. But by his team’s standards, even in this poor season, Sunday’s draw against their local rivals is unlikely to receive much praise.
The Citizens may have kept a clean sheet in consecutive Premier League games for the first time in a year, however they have also failed to score in successive away league games for the first time since December 2020. A despondent statistic to say the least.
Both sides watched the final whistle go with an xG of below one as the players in red and blue all failed when it came to clinical finishing from their counter attacking opportunities.
Over in London, though, there were goals galore as Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Southampton while Fulham beat champions elect Liverpool by three goals to two.
A poor first half from Arne Slot’s side saw them go 3-1 down at the break before they stepped up to find a consolation in the second period.
The Reds do only require a maximum of 11 points from their final seven games to seal a 20th league title, but Slot will know that Arsenal will soon begin to breathe down their necks if they allow this form to become a habit.
