Should Peato Mauvaka have been shown red for this? 👀 #GuinnessM6N | #FRAvSCOpic.twitter.com/SOdzBMVRla

- French hooker Peato Mauvaka was banned for three weeks after a post-match review overturned his yellow card.
- Referee Matthew Carley gave him a yellow during the game but refs shouldn’t make such calls under pressure.
Finally! Proof that referees should not be forced to make match-changing decisions while the players are on the field.
It was the classic situation in the Six Nations match between France and Scotland last week in Edinburgh.
Referee Matthew Carley, after numerous replays, sent French hooker Peato Mauvaka off for ten minutes after his head-first strike against scrumhalf Ben White while both were lying on the ground. It was after the whistle and it was deliberate. Carley decided it was a low degree of danger, penalising the Frenchman for ten minutes.
Bear in mind that the match was in the balance, and even the Six Nations was theoretically in the balance. The Murrayfield Stadium was packed to the rafters with near-hysterical rugby fans-turned-referees shouting in favour or against the card.
Carley will never admit that he was feeling the pressure, but, unless he is James Bond or Chuck Norris, he will have been intensely aware of the situation, and it will have influenced his decision.
Well, Matthew Carley got it wrong.
A citing committee overturned Carley’s decision last Thursday, and Peato Mauvaka has been banned for three weeks from playing for his Top 14 club, Toulouse. The ban was originally for six weeks, but he got the sentence cut in half for being remorseful, tearful, and generally sucking up to the committee.
Being banned from playing is about the worst possible punishment for a player. The more significant the player, the worse the outcome. Mauvaka will have to kick his heels, trying to stay in peak condition for what will seem like an eternity of not playing. His club will have three weeks of doing their best to replace a player who is probably the best hooker in the country, and he will know, if this kind of behaviour is repeated, he will become a liability to his club and any other club that gives him a job.
He will have learnt his lesson.
The only blemish in this process is that Carley was backed into a corner by 70,000 fans to make a decision.
Carley should never have had to make the decision. It should have gone to the citing committee without the referee making that decision.
This has been the point of view of the lucky writer of these words for years. Players should not be sent off! The decision is too critical for the poor man in the middle. He should not be asked to make potentially match-changing decisions in the heat of the moment!
Rugby is a game of 15 players versus 15 players.
Mauvaka should have been cited, not sent off. And he should have been punished, as he was, by the committee deciding in a calm environment.
Save the referees, save the game. Do not send players off the field. Let justice prevail — but after the match.
