- Local people are desperate for peace as fighting spreads toward Bukavu city.
New reports have emerged that thousands of people may have perished at the hands of the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in eastern DRC.
More than 2,900 people in eastern Congo have died as rebels broke their promise of peace and advanced towards another major city.
The M23 rebels, who receive support from Rwanda’s army, have launched new attacks near the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Now they’re moving towards Bukavu, despite previously stating they wouldn’t attack it.
“This is proof that the unilateral ceasefire that has been declared was, as usual, a ploy,” said Patrick Muyaya, spokesperson for Congo’s government.
The fighting is occurring in an area rich in minerals that has experienced many wars.
Congo’s government is frustrated that other countries aren’t doing more to help.
Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner said: “We see a lot of declarations, but we don’t see actions.”
While African countries try to stop the war from spreading, people living in Bukavu are scared and exhausted.
“We are tired of the non-stop wars. We want peace,” said Jacqueline Ngengele, who attended a prayer service for peace.
