- Parents say their daughters at Pietermaritzburg Girls High are being served maggot-infested food in the boarding house.
- The food problems started when a new catering company took over with parents paying R20,000 per term for boarding.
Parents are angry after their daughters were served rotten, maggot-infested food at one of Pietermaritzburg’s top girls’ schools.
In a letter sent to the KwaZulu-Natal education department, worried parents say the food at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High’s boarding house is no longer safe to eat.
They’ve complained to the school and its governing body but say nothing has changed.
The trouble started when eThekwini Caterers took over the food contract from Capitol Caterers, which parents say did a good job.

When parents raised the alarm about bad food, eThekwini Caterers’ representatives claimed the girls were just being picky about their meals.
Parents are also angry that the new caterers won’t provide special meals for girls with dietary needs, which Capitol Caterers used to do.
The education department says the school, which charges high fees, can choose its own caterers but has promised to look into the parents’ complaints.
Parents say it’s shocking to pay R20,000 per term for boarding while their children are served rotten food.
