Los Angeles – The raging fires that have swept large tracts of land in Los Angeles, California, have also destroyed famous restaurants and landmarks loved by movie stars. Moonshadows Malibu, a seafood spot where many celebrities dined, was destroyed by fire on 8 January. The flames also burned down Rosenthal Wine Bar on the Pacific Coast Highway. News reporter Arash Markazi shared pictures showing the buildings before and after the fires. Workers at the wine bar thanked people for their support. About 180,000 people have had to flee their homes, with thousands of buildings destroyed.
UK – Britain is facing its coldest night this winter, with temperatures dropping to minus 20°C on Friday night. The weather office warns of ice and snow in many areas, including eastern England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Thick fog is also expected in central and south-east England. Weather experts say it will stay very cold until Saturday but should warm up to normal winter temperatures around 7–8°C by Monday.
Mozambique – Venancio Mondlane, who leads Mozambique’s opposition party, came home from hiding on Thursday as police clashed with his supporters outside Maputo’s airport. Mondlane fled in October after a violent election that many say was fixed. He left after gunmen killed two of his party leaders. Police fired tear gas at crowds and blocked roads to the airport while a helicopter flew overhead. Thousands came to welcome Mondlane, who says the ruling Frelimo party cheated to win. More than 100 people have died in protests since October, causing significant problems for Frelimo’s 50-year rule.
USA – A judge has ordered rapper Tory Lanez to stay away from Megan Thee Stallion for five years after he allegedly harassed her from jail, where he’s serving 10 years for shooting her. The Los Angeles court decided on Thursday, saying Lanez can’t contact or come near Megan until 9 January 2030. Megan, 29, cried in court, saying she’s scared he’ll shoot her again. She also claims he paid people to spread lies about her online.
