Los Angeles – Five people have died in huge fires raging through Los Angeles. The biggest fire, called the Palisades Fire, has burned through 17,000 acres between Malibu and Santa Monica, destroying more than 1,000 buildings. Another fire near Altadena is threatening thousands more homes. Schools have closed across Los Angeles, and two schools have burned down. Officials are telling people to be ready to run as the fires get worse.
Meta – Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg says his company will stop using fact-checkers on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Instead, users will write notes to say what’s true or false, like on X (formerly Twitter). Zuckerberg says the fact-checkers were unfair and people didn’t trust them. The company will move its content-checking teams from California to Texas to be more balanced. Meta will also allow more posts about immigration and gender and work with Donald Trump to fight against content bans in Europe and Latin America.
Chad – Armed men attacked the president’s home in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, leaving 19 people dead. Security forces killed 18 of the 24 attackers, and one security officer died in the fight on Wednesday night. Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah said they’re now in control. The attack happened just after China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met President Mahamat Idriss Deby. Deby was inside when the attack happened. People nearby heard gunshots and saw soldiers in the streets.
Mexico – Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum wants to rename North America to “Mexican America” after US President-elect Donald Trump said he’d rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” Sheinbaum showed an old map from 1607 that called the region “Mexican America.” She said the Gulf of Mexico has been called that for hundreds of years. She also denied Trump’s claim that drug gangs run Mexico, saying the Mexican people are in charge. Despite the fight, she hopes Mexico and America can stay friends.
USA – Actress Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren are splitting up after almost 17 years together. The couple, who got married in May 2008, have three children: Honor, 16, Haven, 13, and Hayes, 7. They haven’t said why they’re breaking up, and their spokespeople haven’t commented.
