USA – Kim Kardashian surprised her best friend, Tracy Romulus, with a $100,000 Tesla Cybertruck for her birthday, leaving Romulus in shock. Shared on Instagram, the reaction included screams of disbelief and gratitude as Kardashian wished her a happy birthday. Romulus later expressed her amazement, calling the gesture “over-the-top crazy” and praising Kardashian’s unique style of gift-giving.
Nigeria – Nigerian authorities have arrested eight people in connection with the death of 35 children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan. Six other children were critically injured. Among those arrested is the event’s main sponsor, allegedly for their role in the tragedy. The event, organised by Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WING), expected 5,000 children under 13 to attend. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences to the affected families.
Kenya – Kenya has identified gender-based violence as its biggest security issue, with 100 women killed in four months, mostly by known partners. Since September 2023, over 7,100 cases of sexual and gender-based violence have been reported. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi called the crisis “the elephant in the room,” highlighting ongoing investigations and the creation of a special police unit to address femicides. A UN report noted Africa had the highest partner-related femicide rate in 2023. President William Ruto urged action, stating most murdered women were victims of intimate partner violence.
USA – The US House of Representatives rejected a Donald Trump-backed funding measure, increasing the likelihood of a government shutdown this weekend. The bill failed with 174 votes to 235, as 38 Republicans opposed it. Trump had previously derailed a bipartisan funding deal after criticism from Elon Musk. House Speaker Mike Johnson pledged to propose a new solution before the funding deadline at midnight. The rejected bill sought to tie government funding to a two-year suspension of the federal debt limit.
