Police caught four men filling bottles with fake liquor and another selling alcohol without a liquor licence.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said they raided a house in Nqilomathi Street after a long investigation.

“The members entered the residence in Ilitha Park, where they found four males busy filling empty bottles with a fake substance, portraying a well-known liquor,” said Swartbooi.

The men couldn’t explain why they had a bottling machine and fake labels.

In another case, police arrested a man in Paarl with R250,000 worth of alcohol but no licence to sell it.

All five suspects will appear in Khayelitsha and Paarl courts.

Resident Esona Mrhano, 34, praised the police action.

“If I remember well, last month SAPS found more than two places that were manufacturing fake alcohol. Now we are starting the month with the arrest of suspects doing the same thing. As people who like alcohol, we are in big trouble,” said Mrhano.

Sipho Nyanga, 45, said he’s long suspected fake booze was being sold.

“The hangover from the alcohol we buy in the township from black business people we are supporting is very dangerous; it makes us sick for the whole week, unlike the two- or three-day hangover we experience after drinking alcohol we bought from the stores,” said Nyanga.
