Alexandra residents are furious after a 10-year-old girl died on Saturday night from allegedly eating snacks bought at a local spaza shop.
The girl got sick around 7pm and was rushed to a clinic. She struggled to breathe on the way and died shortly after arriving.
Her mother and four-year-old brother, who ate the same snacks, were taken to Edenvale Hospital with bad stomach and chest pains.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said they’re looking into what caused the death.
“A team of police investigators in collaboration with health experts and other role players will be investigating the allegations made concerning the food consumed by the victims before falling ill,” she said.
Angry residents gathered at the shop on Sunday, wanting it torn down. The shop was closed and the owner wasn’t there. All nearby shops also closed as people called for a meeting with landlords on Tuesday.
Police came to keep the peace.
Police chief Lt-Gen Tommy Mthombeni asked residents to let police do their job.
“We have established a team of experts that is working with our partners in government to investigate the death. We also extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish a swift recovery to the mother and the other child,” Mthombeni said.
This comes just weeks after six Soweto children died in a similar case.
