Mexico – Archaeologists, using Lidar technology, have discovered an ancient Mayan city, Valeriana, hidden in Campeche, Mexico. The city, dating back to 750–850 AD, includes pyramids, plazas and sports courts and may have housed up to 50,000 people. Discovered by PhD student Luke Auld-Thomas, the site reveals the dense urban Mayan landscapes. Researchers suggest overpopulation and drought likely contributed to the civilisation’s eventual collapse.
US – Kanye West has bought a $35-million, 20,000-square-foot mansion in Beverly Hills with extensive luxury amenities after selling his Malibu home at a loss. Originally purchased for $57 million in 2021, the Malibu property sold for $21 million, partly due to Kanye’s unusual “bomb shelter” modifications, which removed windows and electricity. These changes led to a legal dispute with project manager Tony Saxon, who alleges labour violations and seeks $1 million in owed payments.
Korea – The 10,000 North Korean soldiers sent to the Kursk region to support Russia in Ukraine are receiving basic Russian training despite language challenges. To control information, soldiers are banned from phone use, but the deployment has caused unrest in North Korea. Ukrainian intercepts reveal Russian soldiers’ scepticism, calling the North Koreans “K Battalion” and questioning logistics for managing the troops.
