Police in KwaZulu-Natal have made progress in the murder case of a teacher who was shot in front of her students and colleagues in July. An inmate has been identified as the suspected mastermind behind the attack.
Provincial police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda announced that the serious and violent crimes unit arrested two suspects connected to the killing of the 46-year-old teacher at Phikiswayo Primary School in Ntuzuma on July 29. Investigations indicate that an inmate may have ordered the hit, with the two arrested suspects acting as the shooter and the spotter.
According to Netshiunda, on the day of the attack, a man entered the school and asked to see the teacher. “The suspect went straight to the victim and shot her multiple times and fled from the scene. She was declared dead at the scene and police established she could have been assassinated because she was a witness in a matter concerning an inmate at the Westville prison. The matter was handed over to the provincial serious and violent crimes unit,” he said.
After arresting the two men, police found a firearm believed to be the murder weapon at the suspected shooter’s home, along with the jacket he was allegedly wearing during the crime. Initial investigations show the firearm was stolen from its licensed owner in a robbery in Sherwood, Sydenham, in April 2023.
The suspects, aged 36 and 41, are set to appear in the Ntuzuma magistrate’s court on Monday on murder and conspiracy charges. The inmate thought to be behind the plot will also face charges soon.
