The Hawks have arrested three police officers and charged them with theft for stealing R180,000 from a man’s home.

Sergeant Rofhiwa Sethari, 38, and constables Livhuwani Oriel Matundu, 36, and Fulufhelo Jonathan Matodzi, 32, appeared in the Germiston Magistrates’ Court on 21 October.

Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela, said the three cops stopped a man in Germiston in October 2023 and asked to search his car.

They then went with him to his home, where they searched another car and the house.

One officer found the man’s child with a plastic bag holding R180,000 in cash.

“One of the officers took the money and told the others they had found what they were looking for,” said Mavimbela.

They took the man to Jeppe Police Station and locked him up. Later, they released him and dropped him off in Germiston without any explanation.

The man reported the officers to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit, leading to their arrest.

The three officers were released on R1,000 bail each, and the case was postponed to 16 November for further investigation.

Major-General Ebrahim Kadwa, head of the Hawks in Gauteng, praised the arrests and warned that “no one is above the law”.
