The Greenock Morton football club has sacked former Arsenal striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas after he was charged with drug importation.
The charges came after £600,000 (about R14 million) worth of cannabis was seized at Stansted Airport in London.
The National Crime Agency arrested the 33-year-old in collaboration with Scotland’s police.
He is accused of arranging the smuggling of 60kg of cannabis, which was found in suitcases on a flight from Bangkok.
“The contract of Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been terminated with immediate effect,” Greenock Morton stated but did not provide further details.
In court, Emmanuel-Thomas did not enter a plea, but his lawyer claimed he “strenuously denies” any involvement in the drug-smuggling operation.
The former Arsenal and Bristol City player will face trial on 18 October at Carlisle Crown Court.
Prosecutors revealed that two women were also arrested, having flown from Bangkok with four suitcases carrying cannabis.
Emmanuel-Thomas was once a promising talent praised by Arsène Wenger.
