The Phenduka family in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, is homeless after a fire destroyed their four-room house.

“We share a room with our drug-addict brother, and he smokes inside,” said Nomahlubi Phenduka. “We think he either fell asleep while smoking or left something burning, which started the fire.”

Phenduka said they are grateful they survived despite losing everything in the fire.

“It was around 2am when my brother started shouting, warning us about the fire. By then, he was already outside the house,” she said.

The five people in the house had to escape through a window.

“We couldn’t use the door because the fire was too strong. We broke the window and jumped out,” she said.

“I don’t know where my brother is. I’m staying with a neighbour, and a family member is looking after my twins. My other two kids are staying with friends. I’m overwhelmed because I don’t know where to begin rebuilding our home.”

Phenduka, who said she would report the matter to the police, said they lost everything, even their IDs.

“We just wanted to save our lives. We don’t have clothes and would appreciate any help,” she said.

Ward councillor Mthwalo Mkutswana is helping the family replace their IDs.

“I’ve provided them with food and blankets but anyone who can help this family rebuild their home is welcome,” said Mkutswana.
