Eight leaders from the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party in KwaZulu-Natal have written to the national office, asking for a new leadership structure in the province.
The leaders are from eThekwini, Uthukela, Umkhanyakude, Ugu, Ilembe, Zululand, Harry Gwala, and King Cetshwayo regions.
Party president Jacob Zuma had promised to set up permanent party structures after the election, but there is still no date for the party’s first elective conference.
Zuma has also said that party members in parliament or provincial legislatures should answer to the party leaders.
Now, the members want the party to keep that promise by appointing temporary leaders to hold the MPLs in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature accountable and hold more power.
In a letter dated 25 July, the leaders claimed that after the 29 May elections, there is no leadership in the province.
They said the entire leadership of the party in the province is now in the provincial legislature in Pietermaritzburg.
“It is with great concern and urgency that we address the current state of leadership in our province following the conclusion of elections and the appointment of all PIC [Provincial Interim Committee] members to the legislature. Since these appointments, the province of KwaZulu-Natal has been left without effective leadership in the political office.”
The leaders argued that having a full-time leadership will help for the 2026 local government elections.
They said they “feel abandoned and disregarded.”
Among those who confirmed signing the letter are Mthandeni Chonco from Uthukela and Bongani Msomi from Harry Gwala.
