Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.
Dundee – The IFP has removed Dumisani Xaba, the leader of the Endumeni sub-district, after he was arrested and charged with alleged stock theft last month. Xaba has been replaced by Aaron Mthethwa, who has since been introduced to members by the provincial leadership. The Endumeni region includes the towns of Dundee and Glencoe and the townships of Sibongile and Sithembile. It is the biggest in the Umzinyathi district.
Gingindlovu – Commuters and taxi drivers using the route between Mandeni and Gingindlovu are living in fear after route patrollers shot and killed a taxi owner from Gingindlovu last week. Their fears follow a dispute over a taxi from Mandeni that came to pick up passengers near the R66 Mall in Gingindlovu. The commuters and drivers fear that a taxi war is brewing, and they may become innocent victims.
Pietermaritzburg – The DA in the province says its MEC for Finance, Francois Rodgers, needs to push hard to move potential tourism income-generating entities like Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and others under the Treasury umbrella to enable his department to generate income proactively. It added that these measures are the only way to fund critical areas, including KZN’s non-profit organisations and the health and education sectors facing fiscal collapse. Ezemvelo is under the Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs, which the IFP’s Rev Musa Zondi leads.
Shakaville – Learning was abruptly suspended this morning at Tshelenkosi Secondary School in Shakaville, Stanger, after a protest by hundreds of learners. Police had to be called to restore order when the angry pupils demanded that the principal, Mr Sibisi, be removed from the school. It is unclear why the learners want the principal out of their school.
Durban – The eThekwini municipality has announced that most areas from the CBD to Umlazi down to Scottburgh will have a restricted water supply between 8am and 4pm on Thursday. This is because the water and sanitation unit will have to close valves to allow Umngeni-Uthukela Water to assess working conditions at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works. The water board is preparing for a major shutdown of the bulk pipeline from the plant next month.
