Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Pietermaritzburg – The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party has begun the legal process of challenging the recent formation of the portfolio committees in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature. They claim speaker Nontembeko Boyce changed the rules to exclude them in favour of an IFP-ANC-DA coalition.

Durban – The significant improvement in business confidence in Durban has been put down to the 29 May general elections, which led to coalition governments and improved political commitment to service delivery in KwaZulu-Natal.

Howick – The DA-run Umngeni municipality has raised concerns over the ANC-run Msunduzi municipality supplying electricity to Hilton without a proper licence, which raises concerns for the DA about financial audit issues. Msunduzi has until next month to finalise the memorandum of understanding or face an inter-governmental dispute.

Newcastle – The Pietermaritzburg High Court has struck off the roll an application by Team Sugar South Africa president Musa Shukela to remove four councillors from his party, accusing them of working with the IFP to remove him as deputy mayor.

Nongoma – The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has denied the Nongoma local municipality’s request to extend the acting period of its municipal manager and CFO, AB Mnikathi and BW Ndlovu, as it struggles with financial challenges.
