Nairobi – Kenyan President William Ruto has fired nearly all his cabinet members after weeks of protests against the government. Only Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi kept their jobs. Ruto said the changes were needed to meet public expectations. This decision comes after protests over a tax bill that led to many deaths. Ruto is now forming a new government, which he said will address debt, create jobs, reduce waste, and fight corruption.
Washington – President Joe Biden called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “President Putin” when introducing him at the NATO summit in Washington, just before Biden’s press conference for his re-election campaign. Biden’s slip-ups during the press conference made Democrats even more worried about his readiness for the November elections when he will face off against Donald Trump. Despite the slip-up, Biden and Zelensky laughed it off, with Zelensky jokingly saying he was better than Putin.
Brisbane – Australia charged a Russian-born Australian couple with spying after they allegedly obtained military information to be provided to Russia. The couple, who have lived in Australia for over 10 years, were arrested at their home in Brisbane. The 40-year-old woman is an army private, and her 62-year-old husband is a labourer. Both recently became Australian citizens. Authorities said national security wasn’t seriously compromised, and no one else was involved. The couple is in custody until their next court hearing on 20 September.
Rouen – Firefighters in Rouen, France, quickly put out a fire at the city’s famous Gothic cathedral, avoiding a disaster like the Notre Dame fire. The fire started on plastic sheeting used for renovation work high up in the spire. Workers tried to control the blaze before calling for help. Seventy firefighters and 40 vehicles were deployed. The fire was contained and put out without causing any major damage. Culture Minister Rachida Dati said the cathedral’s interior and art were saved.
