A Mikel Merino winner, in the last minute of extra time, knocked the hosts out and sent Spain to the semi-finals of the European Championships.
After going ahead through Dani Olmo shortly after the break, Spain conceded late on in normal time as Florian Wirtz ensured there would be another half an hour of end-to-end knockout football.
The evenly contested affair saw the possession equally matched as the hosts edged the attempts while the Spaniards were slightly more clinical courtesy of the extra time winner.
Olmo added an assist to his goal as he claimed the player of the match award after setting up Merino for a stunning header in the 120th minute, preventing a shootout and sending Spain to the last four.
Merino’s winner was the third-latest in a Euro game, after Michel Platini for France in 1984 and Artem Dovbyk for Ukraine three years ago.
Germany have become the first hosts to be eliminated in the quarter final stage of the Euros. They have now lost three of their last four knockout stage games at the competition.
Spain will face the winners of the Portugal versus France game in the first semi-final.
