The tremor was recorded at about 8pm on Saturday night by Earthquake Track, a website that monitors seismic activity worldwide.
Although the depth of the earthquake could not be determined by the site, residents, however reported feeling two tremors in Midrand, Roodepoort, Weltevreden Park, Auckland Park, Kensington, Turffontein and Soweto.
Johannesburg Emergency Services says no injuries were reported following a tremor in some parts of southern Johannesburg yesterday evening.
Emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulauddzi said no injuries were reported.
“At this stage, there were injuries reported or major incidents reported overnight through the emergency call centre. Authorities still have to confirm the seismic magnitude of the tremor. Residents are urged to be safe.”
According to the Richter Scale, an earthquake of magnitude 3 rarely causes damage.
There are over 100 000 magnitude 3 earthquakes around the world each year.
