Former world high jump champion Jacques Freitag has gone missing.

According to his sister, Chrissie Lewis, Freitag, who turned 42 on 11 June, has not been seen since 12 June.

Freitag has fallen on hard times since retiring from competing. Reports suggest that he has struggled with recreational drug addiction and has occasionally been found living on the streets in Pretoria.

He was allegedly picked up by a person from his mother’s home in Bronkhorstspruit.

Lewis posted a call for help on social media, asking the public to help her find her brother.

She mentioned that he was last seen being dropped off near some bushes in Booysens, Pretoria West.

She also shared her phone number for any information regarding his whereabouts.

Freitag is renowned in the athletics world. He won the world youth high jump title in 1999 and followed it with a global junior crown in 2000.

In 2003, Freitag clinched gold at the World Championships in Paris.

In March 2005, he set the African record in the high jump of 2.38m in Oudtshoorn, which still stands.
