The national head of the Hawks, Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya, said the highest number of arrests in the fourth quarter of 2023-24 was for fraud.

The department arrested 547 people for various crimes in the fourth quarter, including 224 people for fraud, with the most arrests in Gauteng, followed by the North West.

Lebeya spoke at a media briefing on Friday in Tshwane, where he shared the fourth quarter report.

He said the arrests targeted persons involved in the commission of national priority offences, which include corruption, serious organised crime and fraud.

During the last quarter of 2023, 547 suspects were arrested and appeared before various courts nationwide.

Of the 547, 526 were civilians, while 21 were involved in law enforcement. Foreign nationals accounted for 105 arrests, while 421 were South Africans.
