Underwhelming England progress as group leaders!

Without playing their best football, Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions booked their spot in the last 16 as Group C winners.

England only managed a goalless draw against Slovenia and won the group with five points after Denmark sealed second spot with a 0-0 draw of their own against Serbia on Tuesday.

Slovenia and Denmark drew all three of their group stage games at Euro 2024, becoming the first teams to do so since eventual winners Portugal in 2016.

The results around them over the course of the three gameweeks helped the rather tame Three Lions limp up to the top, but Southgate will know that improvement will be necessary if they are to reach the latter stages of the competition.

After the goal-mouth excitement in Group D earlier in the day, fans would have been disappointed not to have seen any goals in the late games; with England sitting back too much to bother Jan Oblak in the opposition goal.

Despite 71% of the ball throughout the 90 minutes, it was substitutes Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Trent Alexander Arnold that looked the most promising late on, suggesting that Southgate will be making some changes from the start in the knockout stages.

England will discover their opponents soon enough, with the Netherlands as one of the highest ranked third place sides, likely to await them in the round of 16.
