In what could be a vote of no confidence, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is about to appoint a technical advisor to assist Super Eagles coach Finidi George following the team’s difficult 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign.
Nigeria is in an unfamiliar fifth position in the six-team Group C without a victory in the global competition qualifiers.
This follows 1-1 draws with Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Bafana Bafana and the 2-1 defeat to Benin on Monday.
With George overseeing the matches against South Africa and Benin following his appointment in April, his Super Eagles future is already uncertain.
Stung by their defeat by the Cheetahs, the NFF executive committee “wholeheartedly apologised” and called an emergency meeting, at which they decided to appoint a coach to help George.
The Nigerian football governing body is looking beyond their borders for the man to work with their national team trainer.
“The executive committee resolved to employ an expatriate technical advisor for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks ahead of the 2025 Afcon qualifiers and the remaining Fifa World Cup qualifying matches,” the NFF announced.
The new man is expected to help George win Nigeria’s remaining six World Cup qualifying games, which will give them a chance of qualifying for the World Cup.
It has been a difficult few months for the NFF, which decided against renewing Jose Peseiro’s contract despite the Portuguese guiding the Super Eagles to the 2023 Afcon final.
It was expected that Peseiro would be retained after the Afcon outing, but he was replaced by George, who worked as his assistant.
Before the recent World Cup qualifiers, there was a storm in the Nigeria camp after George’s understudy, Daniel Amokachi, went absent without leave and did not report for duty.
