Gerda Steyn successfully defended her crown while Piet Wiersma won the men’s race to seal a maiden Comrades win.
Wiersma lived up to his word, completing a fine 05:25.01 finish at Kingsmead Stadium.
After coming out of nowhere to finish in second place last year, the Dutchman was sure he would win this time around.
He told reporters this week that he would have “the race of his life,” and he certainly was not kidding!
Dan Moselakwe finished in second with a time of 5:25.45, while Degefa Yohannese Lafebo completed the podium.
In the women’s race it would be Steyn again! The 34-year-old beat her own up-run record as she won in 5:49.46.
Steyn led from start to finish, with runner-up Alexandra Morozova finishing in 06:05.12 and third placed Courtney Olsen in 6:08.09.
Steyn’s victory means that she is now just the fifth woman to win the Comrades Marathon three times.
She also holds both the up-run and down-run Comrades records and is now set to represent South Africa at the Paris Olympics.
