The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party has appointed seasoned administrator Kwazi Mbanjwa – a director in the presidency of former president Jacob Zuma – to lead the party in the province as its provincial coordinator ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Mbanjwa was the director-general of KwaZulu-Natal under then-premier Sbu Ndebele from 2007 till 2012.
He was later appointed director in the presidency by Zuma, who now leads the MK party.
In his recent appointment, Mbanjwa was given a clear mandate to focus on building MK party structures in preparation for the 2026 local government elections.
The party’s secretary general, Sihle Ngubane, wrote to him, saying: “This letter serves to inform you about your appointment as the provincial coordinator of MKP. You are requested to use your powers that accompany this position with high responsibility and care, not to abuse them but to exercise them in assisting MKP to stabilise in preparation for the 2026 local government elections.”
Since December, when Zuma announced the formation of the ANC splinter party, the MK has witnessed several changes in leadership.
The party had appointed Name Mohale, a former ANC Veterans League spokesperson, to lead the party in KZN.
Mohale was then replaced by Nhlanhla Ngidi, another former KZN director-general, who was removed in April after being accused of being an ANC agent.
In May, the party removed Simphiwe Mpungose as provincial coordinator.
