Even though some members of the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party have suggested Mandla Gcaba as their candidate for premier of KwaZulu-Natal, the businessman said he has no ambition for public office.
Gcaba, who heads a prominent KZN family with a large fleet of taxis and buses, said he was purely a businessman.
Gcaba’s spokesperson Jackie Shandu told Scrolla.Africa that Gcaba is related to MK party leader Jacob Zuma.
“Maybe his sin is that he is related to former president Jacob Zuma but this doesn’t equate him to any political ambitions. Gcaba is a businessman whose focus is in the business sector. He is not involved in any political activities,” said Shandu.
Gcaba’s name emerged after the removal of former KZN director general Nhlanhla Ngidi, who was number one on the MK list for the KZN Legislature.
Shandu said Gcaba cannot be drawn to the issues of politics since he is not a politician.
The MK party’s KZN coordinator, Musa Mkhize, said that the party is still focused on election results and it has not discussed the issue of the premier.
He said only Zuma would give direction on that matter.
Meanwhile Scrolla.Africa has learned that Simphiwe Mpungose was removed from his position as MK party coordinator on Monday.
In a letter written by MK party secretary general Sihle Ngubane on 1 June, the party said he will later be informed about his future deployment.
This is understood to mean Mpungose is going to the KZN Legislature because Zuma said no member of the MK party’s executive committee will be in public office.
Mpungose is one of the candidates that have been suggested as the next premier of KZN.
