The University of Pretoria took a step towards securing a Premier Soccer League berth following a 1-0 victory over Baroka FC in a promotional/relegation play-offs clash at Tuks Stadium on Sunday.
Kamohelo Pheeane struck late with two minutes to go to separate the two sides who had seemed resigned to playing for a draw.
After the victory, AmaTuks now lead this round-robin, although other contestants Richards Bay are yet to get into action.
While it was an encouraging start to the play-offs by Pretoria University, it was not an ideal beginning for Baroka, who will now be pressed to win their next match against Richards Bay.
On Sunday, it was a game of few chances but the hosts almost went ahead after 21 minutes when Sikhosonke Langa’s headed effort hit the crossbar.
Even in the second stanza, both sides struggled for a breakthrough and 10 minutes after the restart, Baroka’s Thulani Sikhosana shot just wide in what was the Limpopo visitor’s first meaningful attempt at goal.
Moments later, Bakgaga ba Mphahlele goalkeeper Boalefa Pule was forced to pull a spectacular save from the boot of AmaTuks’ Thabang Sibanyoni as Dan Malesela’s men survived a serious attack.
As the game seemed headed for a share of spoils, Pheeane fired past Pule from a tight angle after being released by his captain Samuel Julies.
It was a surprise goal as both teams seemed content with a draw.
Up next for University of Pretoria is a trip to Richards Bay on Wednesday to meet the Natal Rich Boyz, who are keen on maintaining their PSL status.
